Overview

This qualification reflects the role of building professionals who apply knowledge of structural principles, risk and financial management, estimating, preparing and administering building and construction contracts, selecting contractors, overseeing the work and its quality and managing construction work in building projects including residential and commercial with the following limitations:

Residential construction limited to National Construction Code Class 1 and 10 buildings to a maximum of 3 storeys.
Commercial construction limited to National Construction Code Class 2 to 9 buildings, Type C and B construction.

Information

The scope of work in Diploma of Building and Construction covers a wide range of tasks. This includes interpreting and implementing building codes and standards for Class 1 and 10 buildings, as well as applying structural principles to both residential and commercial construction projects. Additionally, professionals are responsible for preparing and assessing tender documentation and applying building codes and standards to Class 2 to 9, Type C buildings. The role also involves overseeing costing systems for complex construction projects and overseeing the management of construction work overall.

NSW Fair Trading outlines that tradespeople aiming to obtain a Building (general building work) License must fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

1) Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications and competencies include:

– Holding a CPC50220 – Diploma of Building and Construction (Building),

Along with one of the following prerequisites:

– A current carpentry or bricklaying contractor license or qualified supervisor certificate, or a recognized qualification that qualifies for such a license, such as:
– CPC40120 – Certificate IV in Building and Construction,
– CPC30220 – Certificate III in Carpentry, or
– CPC30111 – Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying.

Alternatively, a Bachelor of Housing or a degree in fields such as civil engineering, structural engineering, architecture, housing, construction, construction management, construction project management, construction economics, applied science (building), or quantity surveying from an Australian university.

2) Possession of a university degree in building, construction, construction management, construction project management, construction economics, applied science (building), or quantity surveying from an Australian university. This degree must involve the equivalent of four years of full-time study and include a compulsory work placement.

It is noted that an “associate degree” or an “honorary degree” does not meet this requirement.
